1957 – 1998 – senior technician, junior researcher, postgraduate student, senior researcher, Head of laboratory, Deputy Director for Research of the Institute of Metallurgy of the Ural Branch of RAS (IMET UB RAS);

1993-1996 – the First Deputy Minister of science and technical policy of the Russian Federation;

1997-1997 – Deputy Chairman of the Ural branch of RAS

1998-2008 – Director of the IMET UB RAS;

2008- present time – Chief researcher IMET UB RAS.

1999- 2013 – Member of the Presidium of RAS,

1999-2009 – Head of the Property Management Agency of RAS;

2009-2014 – Head of the land and property complex of RAS;

2014-present time – Counselor of RAS.

Professional activities:

Physical chemistry and technology of metallurgical processes, complex processing of natural and technogenic raw materials, environmentally-friendly, coke-less metallurgy, research in the field of composition, structure and properties of metals, oxides, composites of nano- and amorphous materials.

Development of theoretical and practical research within the framework of scientific field «Development of physico-chemical foundation of high-temperature processes in ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy»: solving problems of complex processing of titanium-containing, iron-chromium-nickel, siderite, alumina-containing ores; development of physical and chemical bases and technological schemes for complex processing, polymetallic ores and technogenic materials with obtaining products with desired properties; development of the theory of coagulation of metal phases in oxide matrices, the study of the conditions for the formation of environmentally hazardous compounds such as nitrogen oxides, furans, dioxins: the search for ways to reduce their content in pyrometallurgical processes.

  • developed theoretical basis of energy and resource-saving technologies of complex ores, containing iron, vanadium, titanium, chromium, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and other components;
  • made research on the processing of metal phases in oxide matrices; researched conditions for the formation of environmentally dangerous compounds such as nitrogen oxides, furans, dioxins, and explained the parameters of metallurgical processes that minimize their formation during the processing of toxic materials;
  • suggested universal technology for processing technogenic, household, medical, and chemical hazardous waste using pyrometallurgical processes, which underwent a preliminary technico-economic study at MetProm-Proekt LLC.

Has more than 450 publications, including 8 monographs, more than 100 copyright certificates and patents.

Prepared 2 PhD-graduates, 7 candidates of science.

Scientific advisor of innovative-technological center «Academicheskiy»

Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Presidium of the Chernogolovsky Scientific Center; Chairman of the Expert Council and member of the Scientific and Technical Council under the Government of the Russian Federation for awarding prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of metallurgy; Member of the Council for the PhD and candidate of science thesis defense in IMET UB RAS, MISiS and IMET named after A.A. Baikov; member of the editorial board of 7 scientific journals, member of two scientific societies of the USA (TMS, ASMI).

IMET UB RAS is carrying out joint work with Israeli scientists on the international project «Producing compact nanomaterials based on transition metal oxides using intensive plastic deformation, studying their structure and properties» within the framework of the RFBR grant (co-director of the project from the Russian side).

Head from the Russian side of the subcommission on the technology of non-ferrous and rare metals of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation.

Scientific advisor/counselor of 11 PhD students, who successfully defended their thesis.
